Gulfstream G600 Receives Type Certificate from FAA

Gulfstream Aerospace recently announced the all-new Gulfstream G600 earned both its type and production certificates from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The certifications clear the way for the first G600 deliveries to customers as scheduled this year.

“Getting both authorizations on the same day is evidence of the maturity of our G600 production processes and speaks to the safety and reliability of the aircraft’s design,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream. “Even more remarkable is the fact that we achieved these simultaneous certifications less than a year after completing another major program, certifying and delivering the Gulfstream G500, another testament to the engineering expertise and manufacturing excellence that are hallmarks of Gulfstream. The hard work by our team, including nearly 100,000 hours of ‘flying’ in our labs and more than 3,200 hours of flying in the air, shows our dedication to safety and our customers.

“These rigorous and thorough certification processes ensure we deliver a first-rate aircraft that exceeds expectations. We can’t wait to put the newest member of our aircraft family — one that spectacularly combines performance, efficiency, technology and comfort that are second to none — into the hands of our worldwide customers.”

The FAA grants type certification after an aircraft’s design proves compliance with aviation regulations. The FAA issues a production certificate once an aircraft manufacturer demonstrates its manufacturing facilities and quality management system meet the agency’s stringent safety and reliability requirements.

The award-winning G600 is the third Gulfstream aircraft model to get its type and production certificates simultaneously. The first was the Gulfstream G550 on Aug. 14, 2003. The clean-sheet Gulfstream G500 duplicated the feat on July 20, 2018.

Proceeds from Children’s Book by Karen Duncan to Benefit the Arts and Business Aviation Education

Karen Duncan, wife of Duncan Aviation Chairman Emeritus Robert Duncan, recently published a children’s book about the family’s beloved dog, Chica.

Chica joined the Duncan family 13 years ago when she laid down by Karen’s feet near a curb close to the El Tajin pyramids in Mexico. Karen took an instant liking to the dirty gray dog, although she was mangy and hungry. Karen fed her, gave her a bath, took her to a veterinarian, and eventually brought her back to the family’s home in the United States.

“I don’t know where Chica came from before we met,” Karen says. “But in the book, I created a background for her that includes performing in a circus. Once she joined us, we traveled from El Tajin to Puerto Vallarta together, developing a strong bond and eating lots of scrambled eggs and beans on the way.”

Omaha, Nebraska, artist Joseph Broghammer illustrated the book with pastel on paper.“I chose Joseph to illustrate the story in part because he has great love for animals that comes through in all of his paintings and drawings,” Karen says. “His artwork is beautiful and I am pleased with the finished product.”

Chica is written in Spanish and English and brings attention to Mexican cultural events and places. A glossary at the back gives children a better understanding of those cultural references.

The book was published through the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum (CCAM), which is a nonprofit organization founded by the Duncans. Half of the book’s $20 purchase price goes to the museum. The book is available through the museum and signed copies will also be sold at Duncan Aviation locations that provide FBO services. For each $20 book purchased at its Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, Michigan; Lincoln, Nebraska; or Provo, Utah; locations, Duncan Aviation will donate an additional $10 to the International Aircraft Dealers Association (IADA) Business Aviation Scholarship.

Baron Announces New Weather Forecasting Model

Weather intelligence provider Baron has a new weather forecasting model available in the company’s Baron Threat Net, Baron API, and broadcast products. Weather models are produced via intense computer analysis using known and projected atmospheric conditions and current sensor readings. The result is a forecast projected out a set number of hours. Baron’s new model offers predictive weather parameters 66 hours into the future, at 3km resolution, in hourly intervals. The model also runs a second set of parameters 90 hours into the future at 15km resolution. The computer analysis performed to create the modeled forecast products is run four times a day.

Bob Dreisewerd, vice president of Development at Baron, described the goal of the new model: “First and foremost was accuracy. We wanted a more accurate weather model than we currently deliver to our customers…we feel we’ve achieved that.” The new model’s chief improvements are in its increased accuracy and higher resolution, all done at a nationwide level. The model’s increased accuracy comes from Baron’s own science, implemented to enhance the leading U. S. forecast model. Running at a 3km resolution nationwide, the new model also offers a higher resolution than the majority of other models. Higher resolution  improves the model’s performance and precision.

Baron says their new model also features more weather products than the old model – including over 25 different weather data parameters. Some of these weather products include:

• Products applicable to daily risks, such as temperature tracking, heat index, humidity, visibility, and others. For example, the heat index product can be applied to help maintain the safety of students, outdoor workers, and athletes during summer months.

• Products focused on rain and rain-related hazards, such as rain and freezing rain accumulation forecasts, cloud cover forecasts, and more. For example, the freezing rain accumulation forecast product can aid municipalities in preparing for inclement road conditions via closures or properly timed road pre-treatments.

• Products focused on winter weather, such as wind chill, wind speed, snow and ice accumulation forecasts, and more. For example, the wind chill product can help users know in advance when to open homeless shelters and warming stations to keep people safe from dangerously cold conditions.

• Products focused on severe weather, such as lightning forecast, hail forecast, storm strength, severe weather potential, and a rotation risk forecast. For example, the wind speed product can help emergency managers focus resources to areas in which trees or power lines are more likely to be downed by wind.

Baron’s new model is available immediately to Baron API and Broadcast customers, and is incorporated into Baron Threat Net.

Elliott Aviation Starts Their First Citation 560XL Garmin G5000 Installation

Elliott Aviation has started a Garmin G5000 installation on a Citation 560XL, a first for the company. The STC was issued on June 7, 2019. Elliott Aviation currently has 16 more Citation 560XL aircraft booked for Garmin G5000 installations. The aircraft is also receiving Prizm cabin lighting and Smart Vision Shades, provided by Elliott Technologies.

Elliott Aviation was the first company to complete a Garmin G5000 retrofit, which was in 2015 on a Hawker 400XP. They have now completed more than 30 Garmin G5000 systems. They have sold and scheduled 17 Garmin G5000 systems for the Citation Excel/XLS. Elliott says they have installed 350 Garmin G1000 and G1000NXi systems in King Airs, “more than all other dealers in the world, combined” according to the company.

The Garmin G5000 Citation Excel and XLS retrofit completely replaces all existing Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics, including the flight director system and autopilot. The G5000 retrofit reduces cost of avionics ownership. It offers ADS-B out, WAAS/LPV, weight savings, dual channel digital flight control system and an integrated engine indication and crew alerting system (EICAS). The Garmin G5000 also includes many options including synthetic vision, turbulence detection, SurfaceWatch, underspeed protection and Chartview. Additional options like CPDLC Link 2000 services, FANS 1/A, Lightning and Hail Prediction will be added as future options. This solution also solves all coming CRT obsolescence issues that operators are facing. The STC will apply to nearly 700 aircraft.

For operators who are looking to just complete the ADS-B mandate and have a discount on a future G5000 upgrade, Elliott Aviation has a Garmin ADS-B STC bridge program that replaces the current transponders with Garmin GTX 3000 smart transponders. Over 150 Citation Excel/XLS and Beechjet 400A/XP’s have completed the Garmin ADS-B bridge program. In addition to ADS-B compliance, Elliott says the program provides significant financial incentive to purchase the Garmin G5000 at a later date.

The Elliott Technologies product, Prizm cabin LED lighting, features full color spectrum mood lighting controlled through a mobile app or existing cabin lighting controls. It is available for up wash, down wash, lower accent, galley, lavatory and cupholders. The system has custom preset mood lighting configuration and allows for customer selectable preset lighting configurations. The PRIZM lighting is expandable to meet the needs of most turbine powered business aircraft.

“We expect the Garmin G5000 program for the Citation Excel and XLS to be a huge success,” said Conrad Theisen, director of Avionics Sales for Elliott Aviation. “We have seen a lot of interest from early adopters with 17 aircraft sold. Since the STC is now approved, we are now expecting another group of Citation Excel and XLS operators to make the upgrade to Garmin G5000.”
