Summit Aviation Celebrates 60 Years of Service

In 1960, Dwight D. Eisenhower was President of the United States, Johnny Cash played the first of his many free concerts behind bars, and on this day, May 6, 1960, Summit Aviation, the oldest, continuous operating aircraft company in the state of Delaware was founded by Richard “Kip” Dupont.

In the sixty years since its founding, Summit Aviation has evolved into a full-service aviation center serving both domestic and international customers including the U.S. Government Department of Defense and International Military, U.S. Government Non-Department of Defense and Special Missions, general and corporate aviation, and state and local law enforcement. It was acquired by Greenwich AeroGroup in 2008.

“Summit Aviation boasts a long history of successfully serving its customers,” said Vice President and General Manager for Summit Aviation Ralph Kunz. “We are extremely honored to carry on and expand the vision that Kip Dupont started with so long ago. We owe our success to that vision, our dedicated ownership, our customers, and the talented team of employees that have helped us grow and expand this company since 1960.”

In light of COVID-19, the company plans to celebrate with the community, customers and employees at a later date.

NBAA Downsizing Staff to Address COVID-19 Challenges

National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) President and CEO Ed Bolen says the group will make a significant reduction to the organization’s workforce, both to address challenges raised by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and “to retain a sharp focus on advocacy, strategic communications, operational support, the production of NBAA-BACE and other events, and other priorities for the association and industry,” according to a press release.

“As we know, the COVID-19 pandemic is challenging organizations of every kind, and NBAA is certainly not immune to those challenges,” Bolen said. “We are working to address the challenge by looking at all aspects of our business, including significant reductions to our workforce, consistent with what we are seeing in the aviation community and beyond. This difficult but necessary step will ensure that we are strategically positioned to meet a rapidly changing series of demands, while also focusing on the initiatives essential to our members. The decisions we’re making have been among our most difficult ever, but I firmly believe they are appropriate to ensure NBAA, and business aviation, will thrive as we look to the future.”

WireMasters Now Offering Build-to-Order QPL Mil-Spec Connectors

Recently, WireMasters says they have observed a high demand from customers seeking assistance in finding parts to complete wiring harnesses—especially connectors. To respond to this demand, WireMasters invested in a 30,000 square foot, value-add facility in Mexicali, Mexico to both stock and build-to-order Qualified Product Listed (QPL) mil-spec connectors.

Introducing the Threadless Nyloc Nut

Introducing the new and innovative Threadless Nyloc Nut, trademarked Vee Nut, a design never seen before. The Threadless Nyloc Nut has a number of spectacular advantages not available with any existing fastening hardware. As shown, a nylon insert is provided with hole diameters to accommodate any standard size bolt.

In this unique design, as shown above, the nylon insert is not threaded, which is a cost savings. One size nut can handle coarse or fine-metric, SAE, UNF, BSW or any other type threads for a specific bolt diameter. This reduces the inventory requirements for your hardware.

There is no chance of damaging the lead thread on the bolt as it is threaded into the nut. The nylon protects the bolt from physical damage.

The loosening torque on the Threadless Nyloc Nut is many times that of standard hardware available today. Up to 300% higher. Loosening during service with the Threadless Nyloc Nut is much safer as can be seen from the graph shown below.

This graph presents data from tests of an M14 Threadless Nyloc Nut compared to both an M14x1.5 plain nut and a M14x1.5 standard Nyloc nut, all using M14x1.5 bolts.

When compared to standard steel hardware or even the available nylok designs, safety advantages are immediately evident. Even after many uses, the Threadless Nyloc Nut provides three times the loosening torque as other hardware.

Another advantage is that each size of Threadless Nyloc Nut can easily be designed for any specific torque requirement. The height of the Threadless Nyloc Nut is increased to provide additional torque for meeting any special design conditions.

In summary, this new and innovative Threadless Nyloc Nut provides for:

Economy in manufacturing Safety in application Minimizes inventory Protects bolt threads Design Flexibility

The Threadless Nyloc Nut has a Utility Patent issued with another pending. Also, the Threadless Nyloc Nut has International Patent Protection, and 153 countries currently recognize the Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT).

SIFCO ASC Operating to Support Key Industries Tackle COVID-19

Electroplating specialist SIFCO ASC is staying operational to support key industries with their vital maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) projects.

“The steadily increasing impact of the COVID-19 virus is creating an unprecedented situation across the world. To help tackle the pandemic and keep crucial sectors like power generation, oil and gas, aerospace, military and marine on-line, SIFCO ASC’s sites remain open under social distancing guidelines,” a SIFCO announcement says.

SIFCO ASC’s teams around the world are closely monitoring the situation and following governmental advice on medical, social, and commercial matters to best protect all those that they work with. Only key maintenance engineers and selective plating technicians are on-site at SIFCO ASC’s locations in the US, UK, France and Sweden, while all non-critical office staff are working remotely, the company says.

“We know that the COVID-19 situation is causing a lot of uncertainty for people and businesses across the world,” Chic Allen, general manager at SIFCO ASC, says. “At this time, we want to make sure that we can ease this anxiety and provide the support where needed.

“By remaining operational, we are still able to take on repair projects at our sites, and we are shipping our solutions to trades across the world so that crucial repairs can be done. For industries like power generation, this is critical, as otherwise generators risk unexpected failures if not maintained, which can then go on to affect electricity supplies.”

SIFCO ASC ships its solutions and repair kits globally, including the Americas, Africa, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions. Bespoke customer electroplating solutions are still being fulfilled, while the company is working with its logistics partners to maintain its standard three-day turnaround where feasible.

Operating from seven sites across the world, customers can access SIFCO ASC’s dedicated support and research and development teams at:

  • Norfolk, Virginia, US
  • Houston, Texas, US
  • Cleveland, Ohio, US
  • East Windsor, Connecticut, US
  • Bromsgrove, West Midlands, UK
  • Saint-Thibault-des-Vignes, Seine-et-Marne, France
  • Rättvik, Sweden

“This is a rapidly evolving incident, so we are all working incredibly hard to react to it and ensure we can lessen the impact wherever possible. All our sales staff and quality management team are still contactable for customers with individual enquiries,” said Allen.

“We also know that economies have been hit hard, so by being able to repair and salvage machinery where possible, we hope we can help reduce capital outlay and lower costs in these extraordinary times.”

AIM Partners with Fulcrum Labs to Enhance Remote Learning

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM), a group of aviation maintenance schools, announced that it will offer its entire student population access to its multi-award-winning, adaptive Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) courses powered by Adaptive 3.0 learning platform, Fulcrum Labs.

Fulcrum Labs, specializes in AI-powered adaptive learning technology, analytics and training outcomes. The course was originally designed to be a Capstone course for AIM students preparing for FAA certification exams. By expanding access to all AIM students as a distance learning component of their A&P coursework, AIM will offer students a rich remote learning experience that keeps them engaged, on track and fully prepared to pass their FAA certification exams.

“For several years, Fulcrum’s AI-powered adaptive technology has been an essential part of the program at AIM as student have finished the A&P curriculum and have prepared for the certification exams,” said Dr. Joel English, executive vice president.  “But within the context of the pandemic, the online course has allowed us to spread exam preparation throughout the program for students and allowed them to continue in their program uninterrupted through distance education.  What was originally envisioned as a supplement for exam preparation has been adapted to provide full online education for our students.”

Since 2017, AIM and Fulcrum Labs have collaborated to prepare learners nationwide to pass critical FAA certification exams. By leveraging Fulcrum’s Adaptive 3.0 learning platform within its Capstone course, AIM says they have increased program graduates by 40 percent, boosted FAA certification exam participation rates by 25 percent, and achieved a transformative improvement of more than 46 percent in FAA certification exams.

In March of 2019, AIM indicated that these outcomes have empowered the company to set the ambitious goal of producing 25 percent of all FAA certified aviation mechanics for the industry by 2021 – thus helping the aviation industry move toward unprecedented certification rates and reducing a persistent and critical skills gap. These goals remain unchanged despite the new educational circumstances brought about by COVID-19.

“We know how challenging it can be for companies to transition from a blended learning approach to a fully-remote one while maintaining the same level of quality instruction that their students depend upon and are accustomed to,” said Patrick Weir, CEO of Fulcrum Labs. “Our platform is proven to help companies meet their critical KPIs with serving the needs and wants of students. And we’re happy to see that, even in this crisis, AIM has its foot solidly on the accelerator.”
