China Express Airlines Choses IFRSKEYES’ Business Intelligence Solution

In early July, an agreement on the use of IBIS was made between China Express Airlines (HXA) and IFRSKEYES. China Express will be able to use IBIS in hosting mode in the near future.

China Express has been using AMASIS in the SAAS model for 7 years. Recently, they have decided to upgrade the solution to the V9.20 release and to take this opportunity to purchase a plug-and-play business intelligence solution.

At the same time, China Express also purchased 3 new AMASIS modules (Inventory Bar Code, Labour Man-hours, and Production Bar Code) and therefore has switched to the license purchase model.

ASM Adds to STC Portfolio

Aircraft Systems & Manufacturing, Inc., ASM, has announced an important addition to their STC Portfolio. The FAA has issued STC ST11144SC to ASM, for the installation of ADS-B compliant equipment (Extended Squitter Mode S Transponders and GPS Position Source) on B737-300/-400/-500 Series aircraft. This modification supports ADS-B Out in foreign (non-US) airspace and EHS and ELS Operation. The surveillance application, as installed, periodically transmits aircraft parameters via data link to available airborne or ground-based receivers. The data so transmitted includes Position, Position Integrity Information, Pressure Altitude and Aircraft Identification (Flight ID). Also transmitted as part of the EHS/ELS utilized by EASA and adopted by CASA are Magnetic Heading, Indicated Airspace, Mach No., Vertical Rate, Roll Angle, Track Angle Rate, True Track Angle, Ground Speed and Selected Altitude. The information so transmitted is broadcast without any knowledge of which users may be receiving it and without expectation of acknowledgement or reply. No flight crew action is required for the transmission.

ASM says this STC is a significant initial program in their full commitment to ADS-B, as mandated throughout much of international airspace before decade’s end, and to the broader FAA Next Gen goals. ADS-B and Next Gen will offer the following critical benefits to operators:

  • Enhanced safety through increased situation awareness.
  • Increased Air Traffic Capacity through reduced separation standards.
  • Greater fuel savings through more efficient operations, particularly during take-off and landing procedures.
  • Significantly reduced environmental impact through the adoption of more favorable flight paths.

Other ASM STCs may be viewed at www.asminc.net

ASM says it has also brought a significant enhancement to its manufacturing processes. ASM has acquired and has trained its manufacturing technicians in the use of the Spectrum Technologies Capris 50-100 laser wire marker. ASM customers of all newly manufactured assemblies and kits will enjoy the full benefits of this technology.

Comtek Introduces New Cam Guide for ATR 72 aircraft

Comtek Advanced Structures announced the addition of the Cam guide to their product inventory; a small metallic part that attaches to the wing flap to guide the path/motion the flaps move through when in use. Comtek’s latest PDA part has been approved and accepted by the TCCA, FAA and EASA.

Comtek provides a two-year warranty on material and workmanship for the Cam guide, and at approximately half the price of its current OEM cost, provides a cost-effective solution to operators.

Comtek says it  has developed a long-lasting product that maximizes efficiency. The Cam Guides are designed with a layer of hardened coating that is wear resistant, increases durability and reduces the rate of replacement. The installation requires no aircraft modification.

Butler National Corporation Aims to Reduce Costs

Butler National Corporation  a provider of structural modification, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and a recognized provider of management services in diverse business groups, announced last month it is in the process of implementing an aerospace segment cost reduction plan.

The Butler National cost reduction plan is to align overall expenses with the current level of revenue in the aerospace business segment.  The plan includes reductions in staffing levels and reductions of top-level management compensation.

“The past twelve months has been a difficult period for our aerospace business segment.  We have taken significant steps to reduce overall expenses during this tough time.  The downsizing of the military and the uncertain funding for our foreign customers special mission projects have made work availability and arrivals very unpredictable.  This results in major fluctuations in staffing requirements.  We are reducing the total headcount and many of our team members may need to take pay reductions to maintain an affordable staffing level to match the uncertain demands and to support adequate levels of customer service. Mr. Wagoner and I have agreed to significant reductions in our compensation to help allow for funding of additional product development as we adapt to the changing market demands,” commented Clark Stewart, president and CEO of Butler National Corporation. “We are excited about the future of Butler National Corporation.  These cost reductions allow the Company to move forward with new research and development projects that may support the Company for many years to come.  We recently announced our application and significant progress toward approval of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the AVCON Stage Three Noise Suppressor to be installed on the 20 series Learjet.  We are currently working on developing multiple STCs in support of the Classic Aviation and Special Mission markets.  We thank our team members and shareholders for their loyalty, patience and cooperation as Butler looks forward to a bright future.”

United Airlines is First to Install Split Scimitar Winglets

A United Airlines Boeing 737-800 aircraft retrofitted with the new Split Scimitar Winglet took its maiden test flight recently in Everett, Wash. United says the advanced winglet improves on the existing blended winglets they currently has on their next generation 737 fleet.

In January, United served as the launch customer for the innovative winglet when it made a firm commitment with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) to retrofit its 737-800 fleet. In June, United announced its commitment to also retrofit its 737-900ER fleet. Using a newly patented design, the program conUnitedScimitarWingletsresidentsists of retrofitting United’s Boeing Next Generation 737 Blended Winglets by replacing the aluminum winglet tip cap with a new aerodynamically shaped “Scimitar” winglet tip cap and by adding a new Scimitar-tipped ventral strake.

“We are always looking for opportunities to reduce fuel expense by improving the efficiency of our fleet. The Next-Generation 737 Split Scimitar Winglet will provide a natural hedge against rising fuel prices while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions,” said United’s vice p of Fleet Ron Baur. “We appreciate APB’s focus in helping United become even more fuel efficient.”

This new winglet design demonstrates significant aircraft drag reduction over the basic blended winglet configuration United uses on its current fleet. United expects the new Split Scimitar winglet to result in approximately a two percent fuel savings for the 737. Once the Split Scimitar Winglets are installed, the combined winglet technology installed on United’s 737, 757, and 767 fleet is expected to save the airline more than $200 million per year in jet fuel costs.

United will begin retrofitting its 737-800 and 737-900ER fleet with the new winglet beginning early next year, once testing and FAA certification of the winglets are complete.
